Heavy-Duty Construction with Custom Design Options
All our hinges are heavy-duty, welded on, and fitted with grease zerks. We offer various latch options, such as a thumb latch, commercial grade lever latch, and deadbolts. Also, feel free to inquire about using your preferred latch.
The standard 0.25″ tempered glass can be replaced with double-pane insulated glass, and even tinted. Standard solid panel inserts are made with the J&E unique, extruded Alum T&G board. This can be powder coated the same as the door, or choose a different color to create your very own color combination.
Carriage Doors Versus Sliding Doors
Carriage barn doors offer a classic, timeless look and are a great option for spaces where there isn’t enough room to accommodate sliding door tracks. They also offer the benefit of a locking latch that can be accessed from both the inside and outside. However, carriage doors typically require more ongoing maintenance, such as regularly greasing hinges, and they can be more affected by wind when opened.
Sliding doors, by contrast, are easier to operate and generally require less maintenance. Because they slide rather than swing open, they don’t take up additional space and are less impacted by weather conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a “carriage door?”
Carriage doors are hinged doors that split vertically down the center. Historically, they were used for storing horse-drawn carriages. Today, they add a classic, rustic charm to barns and other structures.
How do I determine the right size carriage door for my opening?
We recommend ordering carriage doors that are 1/2 inch smaller in both width and height than your rough opening to ensure a proper fit.
Can I install carriage doors myself?
Yes, if you have basic carpentry skills and a few extra hands to help, you can install carriage doors without professional assistance. The size and location of the doors will determine the difficulty of the installation, but most projects can be handled with standard tools.
